India is the global host of World Environment Day, 2018, and in order to encourage global action to protect the planet, we chose Plastic Pollution as the pressing issue to tackle.

World Environment Day takes place each year on June 5th.  It is an annual event to stimulate awareness and inspire each and everyone of us to take a few steps to guard our planet.  It is a call for everyone to come together to face one of the biggest environmental challenges. Below are a few plastic pollution facts shared by UN Environment, which is the leading global voice on these matters.

  • Every year, the world uses 500 billion plastic bags.
  • Each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the oceans, the equivalent of a full garbage truck every minute.
  • In the last decade, we produced more plastic than in the whole last century.
  • 50 percent of the plastic we use is single-use or disposable.
  • We buy 1 million plastic bottles every minute.
  • Plastic makes up 10% of all of the waste we generate.

Our country is hosting World Environment Day with “Beat Plastic Pollution” as this year’s theme. While growing more trees is always our first concern, this year is an initiative for all the citizens to aim for a plastic free future by minimizing the usage and maximising the recycling of plastic.

Together, we can bring the change, one doesn’t need to join a group or participate in rallies to show the contribution. Everything starts from our home, and all we need is to contribute our fair share for a healthy environment and inspire others to do the same.

Below are the tips suggested by Team WS, relating to our Green Social Responsibility, that everyone should adopt:

  1. Make our surroundings cleaner and always use dustbins.
  2. Take organic bags whenever you go out.
  3. Go on feet or a bicycle for a change.
  4. Organic Gardening in your backyards, balconies and community gardens.
  5.  Replacing power-consuming light-bulbs with energy saving ones.
  6. Do not waste Paper.
  7. Set up an environment-friendly email signature like “Please consider the environment before printing this email.”
  8. Plant a tree once in a month and take care of it.
  9. Exchange your ideas on how to make environment healthier and follow them strictly.
  10. Reduce, recycle and re-use.

By participating in World Environment Day, we at Wooden Street, show that we understand the importance of looking after the world in which we live and are willing to take action to preserve and protect it.

Team Wooden Street pledges to make our planet greener and safer by saying no to plastic bags.

Have Healthier and Safe Surroundings!
